Kwara State Governor, Malam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said that accurate data collection is key to national development.

The governor stated this while receiving the Executive Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra who paid him a courtesy visit in Ilorin.

Gov. AbdulRazak who was represented by the Deputy Governor of the State, Kayode Alabi said that accurate information and data were important for policy-making, planning and administration.

According to him, the data collected during the census would positively impact the development of socio-economic policies that would enhance the welfare of citizens.

However, the Deputy Governor assured of the support of Kwara State Government to ensure the successful conduct of the census exercise in the State.

Speaking earlier, the NPC Chairman expressed appreciation to the Kwara State government for its commitment to the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.

He said it was evident the state government was abreast of the importance of data collection toward the success of the exercise.

Isa Kwarra noted that the aim of the visit is to the continuation of the ongoing engagement with the critical stakeholders to create awareness and sensitize them for the forthcoming census exercise.

He said that all the local government areas in the state had been fully demarcated in Kwara state, preparatory to the exercise.

Speaking on the reason for the rescheduling of the 2023 Census by the Federal Government, Kwara stated that “After the Commission completed the pre-census exercise and informed number one citizen, President Muhammadu Buhari, we were told to put it on hold, said this is a transition period, we should allow the incoming administration to be the one to carry it out to ensure acceptability and ownership.

“The Commission however told to continue with some other activity that would aid the success of the exercise anytime it is coming up, such as advocacy campaigns”

Hon. Kwarra added that every house in the country had been physically demarcated.

The chairman said that the 2023 Census ad-hoc staff recruitment was over-subscribed and that only 30 percent of those who applied for the census exercise, were recruited while adding that personnel were recruited from their localities to ensure smooth operation and execution of the project.

Assuring that the 2023 Census will be different from the previous exercises, he said a necessary mechanism had been put in place to monitor the conduct of staff to ensure accuracy and efficiency to mitigate litigations at the end of the exercise.

The chairman thanked the state government for supporting the Commission in the state and solicited continued support to ensure the success of the exercise.

Also speaking, the NPC Federal Commissioner representing Kwara State, Hon. Abdulrazaq Folorunsho Gidado, thanked the government for its support so far to the Commission while assuring the readiness and determination of the NPC to conduct reliable and acceptable census exercise in Kwara State and Nigeria in general.

In a similar development, the NPC Chairman alongside the other management team of NPC also paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Ilorin HRH Alhaji (Prof.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari CFR at his palace where the monarch was decorated as Census Ambassador.
