In line with the international best practices on the conduct of the decennial censuses, the National Population Commission proposed to conduct a census in 2016, but this was not realised due to some extraneous factors. The Commission now proposes to conduct the next population and housing census in 2023, sixteen years after the last census. The 2023 Census will collect information on all persons resident in Nigeria and households using electronic data capture devices. Data from the 2023 Census will provide updated socio-economic and demographic data and indicators for planning a progressive, sustainable development and monitoring of development programmes such as the Economic Recovery Growth Plan, Agenda 2063, ICPD+25 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
