Today, the House of Representatives Committee on National Population and Identity, led by Chairman Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, conducted an inspection of sensitive census materials such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) stored at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Abuja. Accompanying the Committee were Federal Commissioners and Directors from the National Population Commission (NPC).

This inspection is part of the Committee's oversight responsibilities, aimed at evaluating the NPC's capital budget performance and assessing the Commission's readiness for the upcoming Population and Housing Census.

During the visit, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the census equipment, attributing the decline to the indefinite postponement of the census exercise. He emphasized the importance of compiling a comprehensive report detailing the operational status of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and other equipment, noting that this information is crucial for making informed decisions regarding the census.

Census Manager, Dr. Inuwa Jalingo echoed these concerns, highlighting the significant losses incurred due to the postponement. He revealed that many PDAs have ceased functioning because of prolonged inactivity and charging issues, pointing out that the devices come with only a one-year warranty.

Dr. Jalingo confirmed that the NPC is undertaking a thorough review of all census-sensitive materials to assess their functionality, with a report expected by the end of December.

NPC Federal Commissioner, Akwa Ibom State, Chief Engr. Benedict Ukpong, stated that the Commission stands ready to conduct the census as soon as the President announces the date.

Meanwhile, the House Committee on National Population and Identity plans to conduct similar inspections at CBN offices across the country to evaluate the condition of census materials stored in those locations.
